The 2017 Australian Gold Kangaroo is one of the world’s most beautiful coins, with an incredible purity of 99.99% gold, and some of the most appreciated artwork in the industry. As a part of their Annual Australian Bullion Coin Program, The Perth Mint proudly announces the release of the Australian Gold Kangaroo’s 2017 installment.
The State Government of Western Australia guarantees the weight, purity, and content of the Australian Gold Kangaroo, and it is legal tender backed by the Australian Commonwealth Government’s Currency Act of 1965. Originally introduced to the market in 1986, the Australian Gold Kangaroo coin has experienced several design alterations throughout its existence, including the replacement of gold nuggets on the reverse with Australia’s emblematic kangaroo in 1989. The recognition of the kangaroo as a symbol of the island continent dates back to 1773, but the marsupial’s official inclusion in Australia’s coat of arms took place in 1908. The worldwide fascination with the creature, as well as its inherent Australian symbolism, contributes to the coin’s continual success in the precious metals market.
The 1-ounce 2017 Australian Gold Kangaroo holds a face value of AU$100 and features a new scenic design on the reverse. An intricately detailed kangaroo bounds into the foreground as its powerful legs propel it across the Australian outback. The ornate textures of the kangaroo and the foliage-covered plains create a beautiful contrast with the smooth and shiny background. The “P” mintmark of the Perth Mint is located to the left of the kangaroo for added validity of the coin’s origin.
“Australian Kangaroo” arches over the artistic kangaroo scene, and the coin’s specifications – “2017 1oz 9999 Gold” – are engraved beneath. Queen Elizabeth II is gracefully depicted on the obverse of the Australian Gold Kangaroo. Her Majesty, pictured at 70 years old, appears realistically regal in this right-facing portrait designed by sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley. “Elizabeth II,” “Australia,” and the coin’s face value, “100 Dollars,” is written in the space surrounding the effigy.
